How’s Your English?

I recently acquired my TEFL certification through i-to-i Teach English Abroad. My certification includes 180-Hour Basic Course, 60-Hour One-to-One & Online and 60-Hour Business English. Although I don’t have experience teaching students, as an Office Manager, I have done many trainings and my background has made me an English expert. This background includes two degrees: Legal Secretary Associate Degree and Administrative Professional Associate Degree.

What my i-to-i TEFL tutors say

Here are statements from tutors on my submitted assignments.

A very good start to the course, Penny. Clear aims give the lesson a well-directed feel.

The lesson plan uses a PPP structure with a presentation stage which gives students the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language. Each stage of your lesson will help the lesson aim to be achieved and you have included lots of opportunities for your students to improve their communicative competence. Your materials are fantastic: neat and professionally designed. The production task is a great idea to get students talking.

The timings are appropriate for the lesson. It is good to see that you have used a range of interaction patterns – this will give students the opportunity to work independently and with other students in the class too. You have used a suitable range of relevant terminology to
show that you have understood the course material.

Well done Penny, you have created a lovely lesson plan which will engage and enthuse your students. The topic is interesting and relevant, and the use of authentic material is appropriate and engaging. It’s great the way you exploit the text by using a variety of different tasks. The students will develop various listening skills throughout this lesson.

You have provided a suitable rationale for both your choice of material and the structure of your lesson.

Congratulations Penny, this is a very good assignment.

This is a successful lesson and it is clear you have worked hard on this assignment; it is well presented and coherent.

This is a very good course for this student. The syllabus is well structured, and you have clearly
put a lot of work in these lessons to make sure you accommodate the student’s needs. Your tasks are clear and well timed and researched and cover a variety of lexis and skills for the student to practice and then and transfer and utilize in the real world, the pronunciation focus is very good and will certainly aid accuracy and understanding.

The skills you wish to focus on are clear and the tasks are designed well to reinforce these skills and the lesson aims for each of the lessons. The progression of the student’s learning is clear as you develop and move on from the previous lesson introducing new lexis, grammar and skills each time. The homework tasks will help to consolidate the language and skills and also
promote some learner autonomy.

The rationale is well structured and the progression of lesson aims to achieve the course aims is clear and well executed.

This is an effective lesson plan Penny, well done!

It is clear you have worked hard on this and the clear PPP  structure enables you practice the TL which incorporates a thorough presentation and then practice of the TL and it is clear you understand the 1st conditional and know how to deliver this within in an interactive lesson.

The language analysis is thorough and the rationale justifies your choices clearly and the stages are logical and interactive. It is clear you have understood the terminology from the course, as you utilize this confidently within the assignment.

You have chosen some useful resources and the group will enjoy the controlled practices which are enjoyable for the group and these will expose the group to lots of oral practice as they complete the fun conditional chain task and this incorporates a freer practice discussion and personalizes the structures and this stage is interactive and builds on existing knowledge which
helps to make the ask memorable and effective for the group.

The rationale is comprehensive and justifies your choices too. You clearly explain why you have chosen your target language and show how it is relevant to the needs of your learners. You show how each activity fits together as a whole in your lesson plan and how each activity contributes to you achieving your aims. Well done.

A fantastic assignment, Penny. This is one of the best I’ve seen for a long time.

Your assignment is professionally present with a well-designed TBL structure. Clear aims and outcomes create a well-directed feel throughout the lesson staging. Your anticipated difficulties show some good
research. The language analysis is excellent: you’ve chosen some great points to teach and given plenty of in-depth analysis. Your points about punctuation are sophisticated and relevant. Well done.

Each stage of your lesson will help the lesson aim to be achieved and you have included lots of
opportunities for your students to improve their communicative competence and to personalize the language with their own ideas. You build on the learners’ knowledge and ensure that they feel confident and comfortable with the language by the end of the lesson. There is a good balance of independent and
collaborative activities in the lesson. This will be an effective lesson.

You have used a suitable range of relevant terminology to show that you have understood the course
material. Your rationale provides a detailed and thorough justification for your lesson.
